Ethiopië is het land dat, als je het eenmaal hebt bezocht en dus geroken, geproefd en gevoeld hebt, je nooit meer vergeet. Er blijft altijd een vaag verlangen naar.

Een wervelende roman over drie met elkaar vervlochten levens

suikerbastaardFlaptekst: Frederik Spengler leidt een teruggetrokken bestaan in een Roemeens dorp. Hij knapt oude schuren op en zwerft                ’s avonds weemoedig door de lege slaapkamers van zijn kinderen. Op een avond verschijnt in het televisieprogramma Spoorloos een zwarte man die beweert familie te zijn. Diens claim dwingt Frederik naar de Hoorn van Afrika, op zoek naar de man. Jeugdliefde Mila staat erop om hem te vergezellen.

In de jaren vijftig en zestig reisden tientallen Twentse jongens naar het Abessinie van keizer Haile Selassie en stampten er suikerfabrieken uit de grond. De jongens belanden in een exotisch universum; ze hadden ineens bedienden, vrouwen, motoren, paarden. Ze waren koningen – maar niet lang. Zodra hun contract afliep moesten ze terug naar de stempelklok en de draaibank in Hengelo.

Een van de jongens kon dat niet.

Suikerbastaard is gebaseerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van een immense onderneming in de binnenlanden van Abessinie. Scholten speelt in deze roman een geraffineerd spel met feit en fictie. Grote kwesties stelt hij terloops aan de orde: de historische verhouding Europa en Afrika, tussen zwart en wit, de gewijzigde wereldorde, de dominante positie die Nederland in Ethiopië innam en die nu door China is overgenomen.

Suikerbastaard is echter voor alles een romantische roadtrip en een hartstochtelijke zoektocht naar een vader.
