hamerkop2De Hamerkopvogel is familie van de reiger en de ooievaar. De naam is het gevolg van de combinatie van zijn zwarte kegelvormige snavel en de vrijwel even grote kuif op zijn kop. Die samen de vorm van een hamer weergeven.  De vogel is bruin van kleur en is ongeveer vijfenvijftig centimeter groot. Hij kan net als de reiger urenlang bewegingsloos in het water staan. hamerkop1Ze bouwen enorme grote nesten, gemaakt van takken en ander plantaardig materiaal. De favoriete plek is een (grote) boom die dicht bij het water staat. De nesten zijn volledig overdekt en bevatten meerdere kamers. Van de eieren die hierin worden gelegd en de jongen die erin opgroeien is dus vrijwel niets te zien.
